JG WANTS TO KEEP CALDERWOOD

The Villa boss has dropped his biggest hint yet that he is soon set to sit down and discuss a new contract with the experienced Scottish international defender, whom he signed from Spurs last March. At the time 34-year-old Calderwood signed just an 18-month deal with Villa as Gregory looked to plug leaks in a shaky defence - an SOS the former Swindon star answered in style. Now the likeable Scot has made himself a permanent fixture as one of Gregory's three central-defenders and could be rewarded with a new contract that would see him end his career at Villa Park. With Calderwood's contract set to expire at the end of this season, Gregory has told the Scot that if he is still performing in the same vein at Christmas, he will be more than happy to offer him a new contract.

MERSON TO FACE OLD SIDE

PAUL MERSON will face former club Middlesbrough tomorrow at Villa Park, boss John Gregory has confirmed. Gregory handed 31-year-old England star Merson his first start of the season at Watford on Tuesday evening and today announced that he would keep the same side for the visit of Bryan Robson's 'Boro. Until the trip to Watford, Merson has had to sit and watch from the bench as Villa made another great start to the season, but was given the surprise re-call, at the expense of Alan Thompson, in a bid to add more creativity and offensive play from Villa's midfield. LINE-UP VS 'BORO James, Delaney, Wright, Calderwood, Southgate (c), Ehiogu, Taylor, Merson, Hendrie, Dublin, Joachim. SUBS (from): Boateng, Oakes, Barry, Ghrayib, Draper, Stone, Vassell, Watson.
